The Cantus Modalis Foundation is the host organisation of this ensemble, consisting of (pre)professional singers and instrumentalists, and led by Dr. Rebecca Stewart. The ensemblemembers are specialised in early music and often also sing or play in other ensembles. In 2006 the ensemble recorded all known music of Christiaan van der Ameyden, the last dutch singer in the Cappella Sixtina in Rome. The CD was very well received in the press. The ensemble often gives concerts in the Netherlands and Germany, and sometimes makes tours, e.g. in Georgia, Korea, Eastern-Europe. The ensemble (in some sense the successor of the Schola Cantorum Brabantiae) is a wellknown guest in the fringe programme of the Utrecht Early Music Festival. Click read more for information on courses and contact information for the ensemble. The foundation Cantus Modalis also organises days and weekends for amateurs and (pre)professionals on modal singing and modal hearing. Often there is a guest or a number of guests speaking or singing examples. Sometimes there is a special theme, like Hildegard von Bingen. In the coming season there will be 3 three-day minicourses on modal techniques: 22-24 September 2008 12-14 January 2009 16-18 March 2009 The members of the ensemble and other (pre)professionals can also participate in a series of courses, organised by the foundation. The red thread this season is the development of Italian music from 1000 until 1500 a.D.. For now the planning is: 12-17 October 2008: Ambrosian chant 7-14 December 2008: Development of Italian laude from monophonic to polyphonic 18-21 and/or 22-27 February 2009: Zacara and Ciconia in Rome 26 April-1 May 2009: 15th century in Milano In addition a course around Byzantine chant will be organised, probably in the first week of July 2009. This course will be with Charalambos Rivas, one of the teachers of Prof. Angelopoulos' school for Byzantine chant in Athens. For more information, mail dr.
